Unit 2 - Exam
Exam Question: Texture PES (real name Adam Pesapane) is an animator and director who uses the distinctive textures and colours of objects and materials in his stop-frame animations. In the animation ‘Western Spaghetti’, bubble wrap is used to represent boiling water and silver foil it represent cooking oil. Photographers such as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston have sometimes used close focus techniques to explore textures in the landscape and natural forms.

Texture - the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance.
My Initial Plan
- Research Texture photography techniques (Mind Map)
- Artist Research
- Planning Possible Picture Ideas (Mind Map)
- Practice Shots
- Final Shots
- Collage making
My Starting Point:
I have selected the option 'Texture' for my eternally set exam. This is because, it is a fairly simple task as everything has a texture. However the final images that some texture photographers have produced really are something else. After being certain that Texture was my final decision I started doing some artist research. I found the following 5 photographers:
However, I wanted to narrow my artist research down to just 2 photographers as my main inspiration. So I decided to go through all of the photographers listed above work and their texture work. The photographers in bold (above) are the photographers I have chosen to research more in-depth, because of their texture photography.
Adrienne Adam - Intimate landscapes of pattern and texture in nature.
Although I find Adrienne Adams work beautiful I have not chose to model my pictures based on her work, simple because she only does the texture of nature and didn't try to experiment with anything other than nature.
Samantha Gibbons - "Capturing the small details in the landscape can reveal natural texture and form that can sometimes be overlooked at first glance."
I find Samantha's work extremely creative, but it is not something I would like to use for my eternally set task.
Cheryl Tarrant - " Her artwork is always inspiring and her kind words - encouraging. Her natural talents are enriched with, what I have gathered her humility and grace"
I find Cheryl's photography work quite boring which is why I wouldn't use her work as inspiration for my work.

Artist Research:
Lucy Shires.
Lucy Shires has always been an artistic person, from the age of 6 onwards, however she only developed her passion for photography when her son came along. She started taking pictures of him from being a baby upwards. She then had this desire to learn more about the camera, so she started taking pictures of scenes and objects, using the different types of settings on the camera, learning what they do. Her story goes on to her now having a deep passion for Urban Abstract Art.
I love the 'cracked paint on the wall' effect in this picture. I think it is a simple technique, but really shows the texture theme to this picture. It creates a nice image.
In this picture not only has Lucy Shires clearly shown the theme 'texture', but her camera techniques make this picture more interesting; this is because of the small depth of field and the position she has placed the camera.
The above pictures are also two of Lucy Shires pictures that I really like. I think they both show the viewer clearly that the theme of the picture is 'texture' and the two different techniques of showing this make the pictures a lot more interesting.
My attempts at Lucy Shire Photography.
This is the first picture I have taken, the texture of some stairs. I have chosen to use focus points that are positioned in the middle of the frame. I think this is a good first attempt.
In this picture, I have photographed part of the flooring in one of the rooms of my school. Again i have used the middle as the focus point, which although was an accident I think has turned out nicely.
Bruce Montagne.
Bruce Montagnes photography passion is and has always been wildlife photography. His photographs have been in books, on calendars, greeting cards and postcards.
"Making beautiful images has never been enough for me. Nature has stories to tell. They spring from the things I see and the events I witness. They may be told by beach stones, a baby fox, the boreal forest or a family of sandhill cranes. I slow my pace to uncover them using my camera like a writer uses a pen" - Bruce Montagne.
I really like this picture and the fact Bruce Montagne has used animal feathers in this picture. It creates a really soft feeling towards the image.
The cracked floor in this picture, represents the 'texture' theme of this picture. I think the birds-eye viewpoint has worked really well for this image,
Ansel Adams
Ansel Adams is another one of my selected photographers. He was an american photographer and environmentalist. He was born in 1902, so is a very old photographer. He specialises in close up's to capture the texture of the landscapes. All of his photographs are in black and white.
The above photographs represent the texture in the main focus of each picture. I like that Ansel Adams preferred taking pictures of things related to nature, because there are many different textures on things to do with nature. I think the fact that his pictures are in
Edward Weston
Edward Weston was born in 1886 - a very old photographer. His speciality is close ups, and all of his pictures are obviously in black and white. Whilst his pictures don't really vary, and they are all in the same style they are still nice styled pictures.
Edward Westons photographs really capture the shapes, and the textures of the object he is taking the photo of. I like how he captures the object in the photo, however all of his pictures are of similar style, or are the same style so it gets a bit boring after a while.
Resources I will use:
I plan to use photoshop to create the final effects on my images.
I will also use picmonkey to finalise my images (link below).
My Final Piece - Research, Planning And Possible Ideas.
Presenting My Final Image:
Before I started work on producing my final image, I had to think about how I was going to present my final piece. After some research I found a woman called 'Annette Massenger'. The way she presents her images really caught my eye and I decided that is how I wanted to present my work.

- I think the way Annette Massenger presents her work is really unique, her design ideas are really creative. The way she has created a collage with her work, but gave it her own individual touch.
- The only thing i would like to do differently when presenting my final piece as a collage of images then photographing it, would be to ensure I could see each of the individual images. Whereas in Annette Massenger's photographs of her collages, you cant see each individual image.
- I prefer this picture out of the two Annette Massenger photographs, because you can see nearly all of the individual pictures within the collage.
- I like how both of Annette Massenger's collage photographs are in black and white, I think it really adds an effect to it.
